Well, the National Year of Reading is finished. The nine month long year (hey, we’re readers, not statisticians) finished at the end of December.
The results are now in and… we welcomed 14,500 new members into York Libraries during that period, which means that we had one of the most successful National Year of Reading Campaigns in the country. An incredible 14,500 new people sharing York Libraries!
We hope that all readers, new and old, enjoyed the National Year of Reading. We certainly did! For me the most enjoyable part was reading the Railway Children as part of the Big City Read, knowing that I was sharing that experience with thousands of other across York. Powerful stuff. And yes, I cried.
We’ve got an excellent year behind us, with the huge success of the Team Read, and of course, the opening of explore centres at Acomb and New Earswick. This year is shaping up to be even more exciting, with the transformation of York Library scheduled in for later this year.
This blog will be closing shortly. You’ll still get to hear all of our news on our website and we’re always keen to hear your comments through that route.
So long, and happy reading!

You may have seen our monthly ads which are currently running in the York Times. We’re creating a new logo for each and here’s November’s.
Because November is a dark and chilly month this logo (and the ad that goes with it) promotes our great film offers and staying cosy inside whilst you watch them. Why not head to your local library and rent a recent or classic film for just £2.50?

You might have seen the posters around York libraries enticing/shaming you into trying out a book by Terry Pratchett, one of our best loved and most prolific writers. But isn’t he just for fantasy fans? Can you get into Discworld without reading all the books? The Discworld series is now 25 years old, and York libraries are inviting you to see for yourself! As well as promotional displays in all libraries, we are holding a special one-off book group evening for fans AND those who wonder what all the fuss is about.
The book group will be discussing Night Watch, but everyone is welcome to come along and talk about their favourites or discover something new. Just call into York Library to borrow a copy and reserve your place. The group takes place at 6.45 on Tuesday 18th November.
All Welcome……and there will be drinks……
